Arezzo is a city in eastern Tuscany. In the middle ages, Arezzo was a thriving commune. In 1384 however, Arezzo was acquired by the Florentine territorial state and thereafter remained under Florentine control until the 19th century. In the Napoleonic years, Arezzo was the hotbed of the anti-French Viva Maria movement. Though a minor provincial city, Arezzo has a rich artistic and architectural record. Its medieval civic heart is remarkably well preserved, and the frescoes by Piero della Francesca in its duomo alone are enough to justify a visit. Alternatively, you might recognise Arezzo as the setting for Roberto Beningni Life is Beautiful (La vita è bella, 1997).
