4X-AES flew for Arkia Israel Airlines between 1957 and 1966. Another C47 stands today in LLER Ilan and Assaf Ramon airport near Eilat, painted in its colors.
The original airframe rolled out of the Oklahoma City Douglas factory and was delivered to the US army airforce in September 1943. It was flown to the UK, where is was handed to the RAF as a Dakota III, registration number FL562.
After WWII it was returned to the US and sold as a wartime surplus. It passed a few hands until it was acquired by the Israeli Air Force in October 1948. It flew para-supply and transport missions with tail number 1410. In 1957 it was configured as a passenger aircraft by the IAI and sold to Arkia, with this registration, 4X-AES. It's nose art and company logo was a bit different, I based mine on the one in the LLER airport, as it's the only one with clear close up pictures on the internet.
In 1966 it was returned to the IAF, and flew as Dakota number 03.
In 1971 it veered off the runway due to a "wind tube" that existed in the Beluza strip in Sinai and suffered some structural damage. The IAF decided not to fix it and it was buried in the desert.
